Vertical vs. Horizontal

There are two main types of boring equipment, horizontal and vertical. When you use horizontal boring equipment, the material that has the holes being bored is stationary while the tool rotates. On the other hand, the vertical equipment has a stationary tool while the material rotates.

When you use a horizontal boring mill, you are allowing for more versatility because the material can be larger and the tools are maneuverable in comparison to a vertical boring mill. While both mills are functional in the machine shop, horizontal mills are more popular. However, most industries have both horizontal and vertical boring equipment.


How Does a Horizontal Boring Mill Work?

Horizontal boring equipment has two important parts, the boring bar and the stationary part. The boring bar is made up of the following: an insert, a spindle, the spindle holder, and the anchor. The length between the anchor and the spindle is referred to as the overhang.

A common question about horizontal mills is if the overhang between the anchor and spindle okay when boring? Expert boring mill operators prefer to reduce the amount of overhang as much as possible. When there is a long overhang, there are higher chances of deflection and variance on the size and location of the bore. The ratio of overhang to the diameter is usually four to one, however it can go up to ten in certain scenarios.

The insert is located between the rubber and the boring mill. Depending on which on you choose, the result can be different. Different inserts can result in a rough surface, or you can have a finished exterior. The knife edge determines the geometries you want to use.
